Silver Day
It was a beautiful early spring day, the sun was shinning and I was out on one of my favourite fields.
I have been lucky enough to find a small number of hammereds on this field, mainly from the Tudor period. I headed for the little hot spot that I had found on the field and one of the first finds was yet again, another hammy. I have now been fortunate to find over 30 hammered coins since I began detecting, but I have never lost that frill of finding one.
The coin that I had just found, looked to be a Lizzy, but the profile was so worn it was impossible to tell. The legend was still nice and crisp and I was sure I would be able to get a positive ID on line. It turned out to be a Mary Groat! My second from that Monarch.
I have a feeling it was being made into a Love Token as it is so worn and has a slight S bend to it. We will never know sadly.
I had a feeling this was a good omen for a good day and I was right! The next good find was a Gaming Token from the late 18th Century. It had been pierced for wearing. Its a shame but again its very worn.

I always seem to find buttons but they a very rarely in good condition, or are always the plain variety. This time I found a nice condition Livery button, showing an Arm rising from water holding a knife or short sword.
I again found my self in the Tudor hot spot, and after finding some lead shot, and plenty of scrap I had the joy of finding yet another Hammered. This time I was sure it was Lizzy, It was sitting next to a piece of Iron and that is why it has been stained. Its a Elizabeth the 1st Half Groat.
It may sound like this is a great little hot spot, but you really have to work the area for a decent signal. Sometimes I can go for hours with nothing to show for my efforts. Then on another day like today you can get lucky.
I decided to give the area a rest and head for another part of the field. Yet again another silver coin fell to the Goldie, This time a mint 1931 Sixpence

I had been out in the field for a good 4 hours and it was time for a bite to eat and a quick drink. I was really buzzing for the day had been so good for me so far. The day was nice and warm and I couldn't think of a nicer way to spend a Sunday. After my brief rest I resumed the hunt and made a small number of good finds again. The first was a tiny piece of lead with the Fleures de Lis sign. And also another small bit of lead which once could of been part of a brooch once upon a time?
A nice working Buckle
And one of the more intriguing finds was a broken silver ring. Its not extremely old as it has STERLING stamped on the inside.
Here are all the good finds pictured together
And all the scrap!!
So that was the end to a smashing days detecting. I cant think of a better hobby than this detecting lark. And I wouldn't change it for anything.
